Genius Maker is a training program designed to differentiate VMware managers.
Genius maker arms managers with a mind-set of great leadership and a set of tools and framework to help bring that mind-set to life. The program helps managers become true genius makers — aka great managers — and maximizes the potential of VMware’s talent / teams.
What We Learned Along the Way
Make a real difference.
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care the most. This is an important mindset to adopt when developing a program to engage others.
Be mindful of all interactions.
The workplace is filled with thousands of different interactions that happen every day. Think of ways to encourage a mindful approach and make sure those interactions are as meaningful as possible. Remind yourself that sometimes it is important to slow down in order to speed up.
People join companies and leave managers.
Managers make the difference as to whether employees are energized, passionate, well-utilized and contributing their “A” game. Take the time to invest in their development so they can return the favor and help others.

Designing the Program
The Genius Maker Training Program focused on helping managers get the best out of their teams. The program design broke away from corporate guidelines to create an experience that was more playful and fun. We created icons and illustrations to help energize the materials. The hand-outs and giveaways were designed to stand out, to generate awareness, and help increase participation in the program.
Built to Scale
The program gathered momentum and was widely adopted, so we developed a set of guidelines that would give the internal team the ability to easily produce new items for each session and keep the program feeling fresh.
