Aligning a leadership team.
Staying true to who you are and what you care about can be a real challenge when your company scales at lightening speed.

Chartboost was founded on a promise to help developers monetize their games.
But as they scaled rapidly, the founders started to feel that the machine was taking over, and other priorities were diluting their original vision. It became frustrating for the leadership team that was pulling in different directions with different ideas of what success really looked like. This work was about bringing everyone together to get on the same page before bringing the rest of the team along for the ride.
What We Learned Along the Way
Consistency matters.
Nothing frustrates a team more than getting opposing direction from different members of the same team. Figure out what your priorities are and follow through. People are motivated by seeing something completed.
Take time out.
Seriously, time outs are not just for kids. Sometimes leaders need a break from the day-to-day of running a rapidly growing start-up, to take stock of where they are at, and what their priorities are. It’s important to get your head above water to see the bigger picture and to connect with your peers on a meaningful level.
Get out of the office.
A fresh environment, without the distractions of the day to day, is critical if you want to open minds and hearts to new ideas and new ways of thinking. Get leaders out of their workspace to become more productive and focused.
Tracy Lloyd, Chief Strategy Office, Emotive BrandWe had planned a day-long workshop and after the first hour I realized we were solving for a completely different problem. It required thinking on my feet, abandoning what we had prepared, and going with my gut.”
Bringing Strategy to Life
Find the Truth
Dig deep to uncover what is truly unique and meaningful to your business. What can you claim that others can’t? What can you stand behind with full confidence and say “that is us”?
Make Your Values Actionable
The Chartboost values were developed to help rally the troops around the mission and vision. They were designed to create clarity around what matters most and drive behaviors that would keep them on track.
Experience that works
One size does not fit all.
Every Company is different and in a different stage of their lifecycle. Be prepared to flex and do what is needed, most even if that means tearing up the SOW. We live in an agile world. Be agile.
Create a safe environment for tough questions.
We realized the leadership team was holding back, so we created a safe space for them to ask the questions they really wanted to ask of each other. Allowing them to get those things off their chests, meant we could work together without frustration or conflict.
Tequila saves the day.
Sometimes we all just get stuck. The energy wanes and it feels like our problems are insurmountable. Shake it up. Get out of the conference room or workshop space and hit up a bar. The change in chakra works wonders.
It’s theirs, not ours.
Our job is to facilitate and guide our clients to a new strategic place. We don’t always agree on everything. And while we will certainly push back, it is important to understand that sometimes a client just wants something. It just feels right to them in their hearts, and that is OK. Know when to push back and know when to embrace ideas that are not your own.
