Field Note: No 004
Anthropic’s $80.7 billion loss headline is missing a footnote.
A company approaching an IPO has to make its economics as easy to understand as its headline numbers. Otherwise, even accurate financial reporting can leave the market with the wrong understanding of the business.
Anthropic’s updated draft prospectus reportedly shows $16.3 billion in first-half revenue alongside an $80.7 billion net loss. But $72 billion of that loss comes from non-cash accounting charges tied to earlier financing.
That’s an important distinction. The company is growing extraordinarily fast, and its computing costs remain substantial. Both belong in an honest assessment of its economics.
What’s striking is who’s explaining the difference. The press is doing the work of putting Anthropic’s financial performance into context, while the company has yet to provide its own public account of those figures.
Sophisticated investors will examine the details. The broader market is forming its first impression from a number that, without explanation, suggests a very different business.
For any CEO approaching an IPO, it’s crucial to make yourself easy to understand before investors form that impression. Work with your finance and legal teams to put the accounting explanation beside the headline number in your public offering materials, so readers can judge the business on its actual economics.
