Let's talk

Hello!

Field Note: No 003

Every company you buy is making yours harder to sell.

CMOBefore an ExitAcquisitions

Whoever eventually buys your company pays for what they understand it to be, so every acquisition you make should make you easier to understand.

Corp dev sends you the acquisition announcement at 6 p.m. and needs it back by morning. The only line you can still change is the one that says what your company is. That’s the line that decides who your eventual buyer compares you to.

On Thursday, BlueMatrix agreed to buy Aiera, its fourth acquisition in two years. Its homepage calls it AI infrastructure, and the deal announcement still calls it publishing technology.

Its four deal announcements describe it three different ways, and the homepage adds a fourth. A future buyer finds four companies, and customers can vouch only for the version they bought from.

Starting looking to the next deal while your team is still in due diligence for the company you’re buying. Use that window to rewrite the About paragraph—the one every newswire and AI model copies—and have the homepage saying the same thing by announcement day.
