Field Note: No 001
Diligence will hold you up against your competitors.
You're valued on how the market understands you, not who you really are. That’s why the only position a competitor can't borrow is one built on where you're really going.
With a sale or raise ahead, the board asks what makes you worth a premium. Someone puts your homepage beside your competitor’s, and nobody can tell which is which.
Your product is better, but from the outside you’re the same company. Any buyer with AI can now easily make that same comparison across everything you’ve published.
One of our clients and its rival traded language for a year until buyers couldn’t tell them apart. Each change felt completely reasonable—like using the language their customers were looking for—until together they both became completely average, and completely unremarkable.
It changed when our client stopped being responsive and instead led with where its product was going. Their rival could repeat the words but couldn’t prove them.
Before diligence does, cross out every line on your homepage that your competitor could have written, and rebuild what’s left around your roadmap.
Field Notes is Emotive Brand’s ongoing record of how product-proven B2B technology and AI companies are understood, judged, and valued at consequential moments—and the signals that show when market perception is keeping pace with what a company has become.
